Why writers/authors charge for talks

It is wonderful to be invited to give a talk to local groups and those further afield. Often I am told, ‘it’s only for 30 minutes, or one hour,’ Often meaning, can you do this for free?

A time frame is essential when preparing for a talk. Every talk preparation is different because a speaker has to consider the target audience, what they want to cover within the time frame and what they realistically can.

There are also other considerations as to what materials they might choose to use, books, films or other items they wish to share, and often printing costs. On average, the basic preparation takes around two hours or even more. 

The payment requested by a speaker isn’t just for the talk; it helps to cover their time and money spent on the preparations. Because I am aware that budgets are tight, I keep my charges to an absolute minimum.
